Personal Firewalls Blocking Databases

If you are using a computer that has a Symantec Security firewall installed, this may block your access to some of our databases.

These resources depend on "Referring URL authentication", which means the resource needs to know which site you came from. The firewall default settings are set to stop this from working. When "Enable Browser Privacy" setting is checked, it doesn't let the website you are visiting know your previous site visited.

You can use this link to test whether your firewall is blocking your access to Library resources.

Known databases affected by the firewall:

  • Globe and Mail : Canada's Heritage from 1844
  • Iter

Here's how to fix this:

    1. Go to the Start Menu
      -> click on Programs
      ->click on Symantec Client Security
      -> click on Symantec Client Firewall
    2. Select Privacy Control -> Configure link
    3. Click the Custom Level... button.
    4. Uncheck the setting Enable Browser Privacy
Contact us if you still have trouble acessing a database after changing the settings, or if you are having troubles with a firewall other than Symantec.
