CanVec

A multi-source product coming mainly from the National Topographic Database (NTDB), the GeoBase initiative, and the data update using Landsat 7 imagery coverage. Canvec contains more than 90 topographic entities thematically organized into 11 distribution themes: Administrative Boundaries, Buildings and Structures, Energy, Hydrography, Industrial and Commercial Areas, Places of Interest, Relief and Landforms, Toponymy, Transportation, Vegetation, and Water Saturated Soils.

National Topographic Database (NTDB)

This spatial data, covering Canada, was produced by digitizing the federal government's National Topographic System (NTS) maps.

This product is being replaced by CanVec

 

CanMatrix (Georeferenced)

CanMatrix (Georeferenced) was produced by scanning federal-government topographic maps at the 1:50 000 and 1:250 000 scales. Consequently, each CanMatrix (Georeferenced) file or dataset contains map data at the 1:50 000 or 1:250 000 scale, depending on the scale of the source map.

CanMatrix (Georeferenced) is basically a raster image, it can also be used as background data for a variety of applications. This can be of significant interest to users of global positioning systems (GPS), navigators, hikers, and tourists who, without being geomatics specialists, are nevertheless comfortable with digital topographic data. Lastly, CanMatrix (Georeferenced) lends itself to creating value-added products.

NOTE TO USERS: The files are georeferenced for use within software applications such as Geographic Information Systems, and are not intended for hard copy reproduction. Maps printed from CanMatrix (Georeferenced) data may include varying degrees of skewing due to the georeferencing of the data.

The Ministry of Natural Resources - Ontario Geospatial Data Exchange (OGDE) provides accesss to;

Ontario Fundamental Dataset - over 200 themes, including buildings, contours, roads, water bodies, spawning areas, conservation areas, etc.   LIST OF THEMES.

Ontario Base Maps - topographic data equivalent to the paper OBM's.

Digital Elevation Models (DEM's) at 20 m resolution in northern Ontario and 10m resolution in southern Ontario.
