Printer-only computers

You wrote:

Please please PLEASE get computers that can be used for PRINTING alone. I am an education student and my printer does not read anything from Vista. Many student need to print material off at the school. These students can spend more than 20 min on a computer and many times all the computers are being used while I am up at the university. Printing only takes a few moments. PLease set up a computer or 3 that can be used for printing only.

Thanks.

Done. We've set up one "Express Print" computer station in the lounge. We'll keep an eye on it and add more Express Print stations if the demand warrants.

Thank you for your suggestion!

Printers

In regards to the printers: Using our own student cards whenever we have to print something is so inconvenient and having to put money into it each time. A better idea would be to let the librarians take money from students and print things off, since most of the time their [sic] doing their homework and have nothing to do.

At this time, the Education Centre Library provides self-serve printing only. The current system of "print and release" is designed to prevent unclaimed print jobs, and this helps keep our costs lower, which lets us spend more money on books and other resources to support your studies. It's true that there are other self-serve systems that don't require the use of student cards. For example, some systems allow students to maintain an online account balance for their printing. But most of the Universities in Ontario use the same system as we do, so perhaps there are other complications with those sorts of systems. In the meantime, we will collaborate with Nipissing University Technology Services and the Nipissing Finance Office to explore other printing options.

Note: There are less expensive printing options available on campus! At the time of writing, Nipissing's Print Plus and Canadore's Print Shop will both print most standard document formats (Word, Excel, PDF, Powerpoint) for $0.07 per copy (black and white).

Although staff may not appear busy to the casual observer, our library clerks and technicians often have clerical work to do when they are not providing direct service to library users.

Thank you kindly for your suggestion.

Dirty desks

Wash the desks (carrels) in the Quiet Study Rooms -- minimum once a week please!!  They are disgusting!
A:  We have asked Housekeeping if they could clean the carrels on a regular (probably not weekly) basis.  This department is limited in what they can incorporate into their regular duties due to manpower and budget constraints.  Thank you for your suggestion.

Drosophilidae

Q: There are fruit flies in the library. Isn't anyone worried about the preservation of books. Fruit flies are just an indication of other pests in this library. Why do you allow food in here?? I have never been to another library which actually allows people to walk in with a slice of pizza in hand. ??why ??

Thank you for your expression of concern about the state of our library collections.

The fruit flies have been a nuisance since the late fall and tend to be a seasonal problem everywhere. The cleaning staff took steps to reduce the numbers of fruit flies, but the problem seems to have erupted once again. Thank you for drawing it to our attention. I will ensure that Physical Plant has been notified of the recurrence.

Many libraries all across North America, both public and academic, allow the consumption of snack foods and/or drinks in an effort to make a more welcoming environment for library users. Libraries work toward striking a balance between the comfort of users and the preservation of materials.

As you know, lending institutions have limited control over how books are handled once they leave the library. People may enjoy a variety of food and drink with library materials in hand. They may leave books and media in vehicles for long periods exposing them to heat and cold, also a major preservation issue. For the most part, library users tend to be considerate of library materials and view them as their responsibility in respecting the borrowing agreement.

Once again, thank you for your comments.

It's too darn hot

Turn the heat down!!!!! It’s always way too hot in here since there are so many people in here.  It’s a difficult environment to work in.

We are in constant contact with Physical Resources regarding the fluctuation of the temperature in the Library.  At present they are working on the temperature in the computer area (front of library) so hopefully it will be more comfortable in the near future.   Thank you for bringing this issue forward.
